Why Sunrise Behavior?
What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?
ACT is a behavior analytic approach that integrates mindfulness, acceptance, and commitment strategies to help individuals achieve psychological flexibility. ACT encourages individuals to change their relationship with negative thoughts and emotions. The primary goal is to live a meaningful life guided by personal values, even in the presence of emotional discomfort or psychological challenges.
Core Components of ACT
- Cognitive Defusion- Techniques to reduce the impact of negative thoughts by altering how individuals relate to them. For example, viewing thoughts as mental events rather than truths.
- Acceptance- Encouraging individuals to embrace unpleasant emotions or experiences rather than avoiding or suppressing them.
- Contact with the Present Moment- Cultivating mindfulness to stay grounded in the here and now, enhancing awareness of thoughts, feelings, and surroundings.
- Values Clarification- Identifying core personal values that provide direction and meaning to life.
- Committed Action- Taking goal-oriented steps aligned with one’s values, despite obstacles or discomfort.
- Self-as-Context- Fostering a perspective where individuals see themselves as separate from their thoughts and feelings, creating room for psychological flexibility.
Meet Maggie
Maggie is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and has
lived and worked around the United States in a clinical and
educational settings. For over a decade she has worked with
the special education community- as a teacher, in home
clinician, and Special Olympics coach. In addition to supporting
children and their families, Maggie has worked as mentor to
fellow Behavior Analysts and Behavior Analysts in training.
After 9 years working in the insurance based Applied Behavior
Analysis (ABA) space, Maggie decided to pivot her career and
focus her skillset in a way more inline with her values.
She started Sunrise Behavior Services to support other young
professionals in rediscovering their “why,” and shaping their
career to better serve them and their comunity.
Maggie lives in Colorado with her dog, Goldie.
